IgA deficiency and autoimmunity.

selective deficiency of immunoglobulins A - Clinical manifestations

The majority (85-90%) of IgA-deficient individuals are asymptomatic. Moreover, it is unlikely that in the absence of other primary immunodeficiencies associated with, children who are less than 5 years and a serum IgA concentration> 5 mg / dL gets a serious deficit in the subsequent period (58). This observation was confirmed in a study evaluating the clinical course in 40 children with severe disease (defined as concentration of serum IgA <5 mg / dL) and 40 with partial deficiency (IgA> 5 mg / dL but with values lower than 2 standard deviations from normal mean values) (64). At a distance of 4 years after initial diagnosis, the levels serum IgA had become normal in about 50% of children with partial deficiency. In contrast, normal levels of IgA were not observed in the group of children with severe disease initially.
